The Pool Comes to You

The healing of the lame man in John 5 teaches a beautiful truth about Jesus Christ. Crippled for 38 years, this invalid had no one to help him into the pool to be healed. “While I am trying to get in, somebody else gets there first.” So the Pool comes to him. He who’s full of Living Waters speaks, “Get up, pick up your mat, and walk.” What the Lord Jesus commands, He also empowers.

Later on, Jesus issues another impossible command: “Quit your sins, or a worse thing may happen to you.” In Adam we are slaves to sin, unable to walk in the light, incapable of walking before God in a well-pleasing way. But He who the Son sets free is free indeed! Here is our good news: the Pool comes to us. The Lord makes us holy–spirit, soul, and body. No man can do this for us, only He Himself. “Quit your sins”–Christ comes to forgive, cleanse and empower us to walk with Him. What is impossible with men is possible with God. Faith sees Christ as our Pool of Bethesda who comes to us to immerse us in His life and strength!
